In 2014, Miss Shelley and her daughters sued the county of San Joaquin, Sheriff Steve Moore in his official capacity as Sheriff, and Steve Moore individually for the way that the remains of Jo Ann Hobson were handled. They asked for damages due to negligence and emotional stress.
